Jordi Dolader participates in expert discussion on energy strategy challenges for Spain organised by El Pais and Gas Natural Fenosa.
ast 6th April 2017, El País and Gas Natural Fenosa brought together a panel of experts to discuss about the challenges for the Spain energy sector in achieving its sustainable development targets. Our colleague Jordi Dolader was part of that group of selected experts, together with Antoni Peris, Antonio Blanco, Joan Ramón Morante and Carlos Solé.
The discussion hosted by El País went from the challenge of integrating renewables with the current limitations of large-scale storage solutions, to the electrification of transport vehicles. In both areas, experts see an important role for natural gas in Spain, backing up the transition to increasingly cleaner energy solutions.
Everybody agrees on the interest of moving towards sustainable technologies, but an important pending issue arises when evaluating sunk costs of incumbent assets. As Jordi Dolader highlights:
“What do we do with infrastructure that is not going to be used and that generates fixed costs for the consumer?”
Hinting at the way forward: “The consumer needs to be increasingly empowered and politicians should design and orderly energy transition. […] Energy Policy should take care of both the current and future energy mix and governance, that is, who should manage, which activities shall be regulated and what is left to the market” so that no winners/losers are created and everything is done in a sustainable manner, relying on technologies as they mature.
